Global Learning Courses

-
AMH 4671 – Race, Gender, and Science in the Atlantic World
Dr. Cornelius's course was my first formal introduction to eugenics and its roots in the trans-Atlantic slave trade. While I knew what eugenics were, the history of this horrible pseudoscience was not something I was exposed to very much previous to this course. -
EUH 4384 – The Premodern Mediterranean
-
INR 3081 – Contemporary International Problems
-
INR 4075 – International Protection of Human Rights
-
LAH 4721 – History of Women in Latin America
This was my favorite course I took at FIU without contest. Dr. Premo helped us deconstruct our ideas about Latin American history and movements. Using an intersectional feminist lens for historical analysis, we studied the history of Latin America from the civilizations before colonialism all the way to the populist movements of 20th century and questioned the very divisions of historical periods as they are usually established. -
LAH 4734 – Latin American History Through Film
-
LAS 3002 – Introduction to Latin American and Caribbean Studies
-
PRT 3510 – Witnessing War in Lusophone Cultures
Professor Gavioli taught this course in English and Portuguese. It explored the effects of war on culture and how the violence and brutality of war was experienced by the population and depicted in Lusophone media. The course also drew parallels to the Vietnamese and Japanese experiences. -
WOH 3244 – World War II: A Global History
-
WST 3015 – Introduction to Global Gender and Women's Studies
-
WST 4115 – Gender Violence and the Law: Global Perspectives
Dr. Moura explained the basics of gender and feminist theory and presented the legal challenges that people of different genders and sexualities face globally. Using case studies and theoretical texts, we had a comparative approach to the legal systems of different nations and looked at possible changes to prevent legally sanctioned gender-based violence.
