FLAS Fellowship

The Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship by the US Department of Education is meant to support students with their studies in a Latin American-based critical language (Portuguese, Haitian Creole, Quechua, Quichua, etc). Through my experience in the FLAS Fellowship, I attained an advanced level of Portuguese language proficiency and learned a lot about Brazilian culture and the overall Lusophone world. I took courses in Portuguese translation, the experiences of war in Lusophone countries, Business Portuguese, and even comparative economics!

My experience in this fellowship spurred my involvement in the Portuguese Language and Brazilian Culture certificate program and the Brazilian Culture Club (BCC). Through BCC, I was able to meet Brazilian artists, businesspeople, and educators over a series of lectures and panels. I was also able to volunteer at a local non-profit organization to help young children learn the Portuguese language. My experiences in these programs and the overall fellowship lead to my personal growth as an educator and researcher. I truly enjoyed every moment within these organizations and the cherish the chance I had to share my knowledge with young people.
